debate 04Debating is not a discussion. Debating is a competitive activity between two teams with judges and rules. Debating requires strategy and quick-thinking, Debating means knowing the subject, but identifying and targetting your opponents´ weaknesses matter more.

What : An eight-hour programme to introduce teachers and/or students to competitive debating, approaches and strategies.

Who : (a) for teachers new to coaching debating (b) for students new to debating (c) combined groups of students and teachers

Length : eight hours – one-day intensive or two half-days semi-intensive or four two-hour sessions

Eligible for SENCE : yes (teacher-programmes only)

Eligible for Ley SEP : yes

Format : interactive workshop

Modalities : face-to-face “open”, or face-to-face “closed”

Recommended previous programmes : none

Recommended English level : for teachers CEFR-B2 or higher*, for students CEFR-B1 or higher

Programme Fee ; CLP110,000 (before SENCE)

Contents :

debate 01Session I – Justifications, format, organisation and development of a programme
Session II – The affirmative (government or proposition), defining a motion, building a case and the roles of the speakers
Starters III – The negative (opposition), challenging a motion, building a case and the roles of the speakers
Starters IV –  Basic strategies, judging, practical activity
