What do they mean?

The world of teaching and learning is replete with abbreviations and acronyms which can quickly becoming quite confusing. What do they all mean? Here are some of the more common. If you find any we have missed, please let us know and please like us on Facebook to receive regular updates.

 

A-Levels  Advanced Levels, a series of subject examinations offered by CIE usually taken at the end of secondary education as a universary entrance qualification or pre-requisite, or around Grade 12 / Year 13, age 18.

ALTE  Association of Language Testers in Europe

CAE  Cambridge Advanced English, the fourth of the five Cambridge English Langauge Tests offered by Cambridge English Examinations. Equivalent to ALTE 4.

CEE  Cambridge English Examinations, one of the examination boards of the University of Cambridge. CEE offers KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE, TKT, CELTA, DELTA

CELTA  Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, a teaching methodology qualification offered by Cambridge English Examinations.

CIE  Cambridge International Examinations, one of the examination boards of the University of Cambridge. CiE offers IGCSE, O-levels and A-Levels.

CLIL  Content and Language Integrated Learning, essentially the same as EMI

CPE  Cambridge Proficiency in English, the fifth of the five Cambridge English Langauge Tests offered by Cambridge English Examinations. Equivalent to ALTE 5.

DELTA  Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults, a teaching methodology qualification offered by Cambridge English Examinations.

EAL  English as an Academic Language

EFL  English as a Foreign Language, a perennial confusion with ESL. It´s perhaps best to research the difference yourself if you need to differentiaite between the two.

ELT  English Language Teaching

EMI  English as a Medium of Instruction. Schools which teach in and through English, for example content areas such as mathematics and science are taught in English, but which are not ESL / EFL programmes.

ESL  English as a Second Language, not to be confused with ESOL or EFL. See EFL.

ESOL  English for Speakers of Other Languages

FCE  The First Certificate in English, the third of the five Cambridge English Langauge Tests offered by Cambridge English Examinations. Equivalent to ALTE 3.

FCEfS  First Certificate in English for Schools, the third of the five Cambridge English Langauge Tests offered by Cambrridge English Examinations. The same as FCE , but with topics, examples and prompts more suitable for younger candidates. Equivalent to ALTE 3.

IBMYP  International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme for G5 – 10.

IBPYP  International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme for G1 – 5, with an additional Pre-School module.

IELTS  International English Language Testing System, usually used to refer to the qualication itself

IGCSE  International General Certificate of Secondary Education, a series of subject examinations offered by CIE usually taken at the end of compulsory education, or around Grade 10 / Year 11, age 16.

KET  Key English Test, the first of the five Cambridge English Langauge Tests offered by Cambridge English Examinations. Equivalent to ALTE 1.

TESL  Teaching English as a Second Language.

TESOL  Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

TKT  Teaching Knowledge Test, a teaching methodology qualification offered by Cambridge English Examinations.
